Flashback Inspiration : Photographer Bob Carlos Clarke

TO SAY THAT BOB CARLOS Clarke was successful is understatement to the extreme. He practically invented his own style and is best known for his powerful images of beautiful women clad in rubber, latex or nothing at all. He was wealthy and enjoyed a large house in Chelsea. He had a beautiful wife, Lindsey, to whom he'd been married for 20 years, and a daughter, Scarlett. But Carlos Clarke also had a darker side and suffered from depression. Those who knew Carlos Clarke often describe a different man: someone who craved attention, who was terrified of rejection and who was often obsessive and paranoid about his work. Depression afflicted his mother too, as well as an uncle who killed himself at the age of 14. And it was depression that would claim Carlos Clarke's life too.

Tragically, on 25 March 2006 Carlos Clarke left the Priory Clinic, where he was a voluntary patient, and walked to a level crossing near Barnes where he threw himself in front of a train bound for London Waterloo. At the time of his death, he was working on a project with friend and chef Marco Pierre White, who he first photographed back in 1987. The pair were installing Carlos Clarke's pictures in Pierre White's London West End restaurant, Luciano. It fell to Carlos Clarke's widow Lindsey and his agent Ghislain Pascal to complete the project. And earlier this year, they did just that. Walking into Luciano's now is an experience all lovers of photography should have. Huge prints of Carlos Clarke's work adorn the walls: a true legacy and a more impressive sight than can be seen in many dedicated photographic galleries. To mark the completion of the Luciano project, Pro invited six people who knew Bob Carlos Clarke better than anyone to come and discuss his life and work over dinner. Joining Lindsey Carlos Clarke and Ghislain Pascal were printer Ted Chan, framer Tim Blake, photographer John Stoddart and writer Simon Garfield. Surrounded by Bob's work in the private dining area of Luciano, conversation soon turned to the pictures, and what Bob himself would have thought of the completed exhibit.

- via Retrospective from Ian Farrel

Lindsey Carlos Clarke, wife of the late Bob, has opened a new photography gallery: The Little Black Gallery at 13A Park Walk, London SW10 0AJ (t: 020-7349 9332, www.thelittleblackgallery.com).  The gallery will showcase photography from around the world, and will also be home to the Bob Carlos Clarke Foundation.  There will be a ‘Bob Carlos Clarke’ room with a rotating exhibition of his work available to buy - including many pictures available for the very first time.

Designing in a Recession : Kazuo AW 09 Collection

Posted: 06 Feb 2009 10:10 AM PST

kzo-fall09-1

Despite all feelings of fear or industry recession KZO continues to build on its aesthetic in a very aggressive way. Better fabrics, more tailoring, and a deeper range. There are no signs of uncertainty in this Joel K’s collection for AW09. Full throttle development is what I like to call it. In a time where people are afraid to allocate dollars, basic is no longer safe. People are looking for smart, timeless design and KZO has truly delivered this for their upcoming season. Its hard to tell in the “Hallowed Ground” photos how intricate the finishes and fabrication on each of these garments are but once you get your hands on this collection there will be no doubt in your mind. Continue reading for the Brett Westfall x KZO collab below…

Brett Westfalls & KZO Collab AW 09

Every since Joel K started Kazuo he has collaborated with Brett Westfalls on a few pieces each season. It seems that this collaboration grows into a more substantial part of the collection each season with its most cohesive story yet for AW 09. Check it out below.

Junior Boys : Dull to Pause

junior-boys

The Junior Boys of forthcoming LP Beyond Dull Care seems to be getting a lot of heat from the music junkies. Its quite softer that their last few albums, and steps into a new genre. The feedback is nor negative nor hyper positive, I think fans are trying to take it all in for now. I am pretty fond of “Dull to Pause”, I like the tempo and vibe and am looking very much forward to the release of the album on April 7th, 2009.

Nudes & Landscapes : Justine Kurland

Posted: 06 Feb 2009 08:58 AM PST

justine-kurland-7

Warsaw born, NY based photographer Justine Kurland’s Nudes from her series “Of Woman Born” are fascinating in their “hyperreal artificiality” (BNET). The depiction of breast feeding mothers and their infants gathered in cult-like or hippie commune environments where they all stand naked is both eerie and beautiful. Its so natural its seems unreal! And the best part of all her work is the high-keyed, large-format C-prints that her images are presented on.

Superbowl Commercial 2009 Review

Posted: 05 Feb 2009 11:55 AM PST

So here is the full Review of the Superbowl 2009 commercial ( almost all here )

NBC - HEROES OF THE GRIDIRON:

For this year 2009 the cost of the Superbowl ads was average $3 Millions per 30 sec. spot - This year ads was reflective of the economic downturn, many were not well received by the viewers, critics decide ‘the game was better than the ads‘ - With few new ads type like the LifeWater with the 3D glasses ad and Miller with the 1sec commercial. Some newcomers like Hulu, Denny’s and the Winner for 2009 by youtube and the critics is the Doritos ads, created by contest (which earns the creator a sweet $1M). There’s till some funny one and I like many of them…Which one you like or don’t like ?! WATCH All of them After the jump

Surf City : Mt. Kill

surf-city-ep

On their debut EP, Surf City find a perfect blend between the sounds of warm 1960’s California pop and raw, angry punk. The New Zealand foursome has been making a name for themselves on their home turf but they’ve yet to break through anywhere outside of that. Their songs are full of distortion and hazey/pretty melodies, tender emotions and anger.  The video for ‘Dickshaker’s Union‘ features the band jamming in a cramped garage and a cuddly bear pogo-sticking in slow motion in front of bright, blue skies, which I reckon is an apt fit for the band. And if the album artwork looks familiar, its because its by the “Assembly-Line Picasso” Steve Keene, who has also done album covers for Pavement and the Silver Jews.
