The importance of the above options becomes clear when we ask the question "What if energy availability declines?" Beyond the abundant availability of fossil fuels is an uncertain energy future that has been pictured in various scenarios that range from "techno-fantasy" (e.g., unlimited nuclear cold fusion with no unforseen negative impacts) - an absurdly optimistic scenario but frightening in its implications for humanity and the planet - to an "Atlantis-like" fate in which our culture "goes under". Most of the sustainability debate is focused within the "green-tech stability" scenario in which we essentially maintain a steady (albeit somewhat reduced) level of energy usage by progressively moving to renewable sources such as wind, solar, tidal power, etc., as fossil fuel reserves are used up.

While permaculture strategies mesh nicely with many of those directed towards this generally accepted desirable future, permaculture in fact defines a creative response to a fourth scenario that I call "Earth Stewardship" - a "creative descent" in which we progressively reduce our energy demands to return eventually to living within the natural energy and production budget of the land we occupy. Elements of all these scenarios can be found in the wide-ranging viewpoints and arguments of today's "sustainability" debates.

on loan from JP Munro:

Revolt Against the Modern World by Julius Evola

I can hear Dennis Hollingsworth clenching his jaw.

Traditionalism usually becomes more appealing to societies when populations are destabilized or demographics have shifted in favor of a small minority. The broad middle class is the bedrock of our democratic system. If it dissolves or disappears, it will logically follow that elites will shore up their power with increasingly fascistic measures. Large disillusioned masses are easily propagandized and highly prone to manipulation. Take a look at Weimar Germany...

hmm....it also reminds me of these graphs

a short video i made about cars and trucks in my neighborhood

..nothing much happens, but it's kind of hypnotic. The endless movement of large personal transportation machines as gasoline is converted into kinetic energy. Several hundred million barrels a day. On and on... and on.

The de Beaufort Transportation Initiative Plan calls for the gradual but timely replacement of the gasoline fleet with small electric-golf cart style vehicles. This transition will be coupled with a massive rebuilding of the transportation infrastructure funded by an immediate and enormous government investment and creation of private incentive programs-resulting in the expansion of public transit and railroad systems. It would also be a good idea to re-think our urban planning, creating communities that are pedestrian friendly and imagined on a human scale. This would mean the transformation of the box stores and strip mall business model into a more localized and widely dispersed hybrid stores system somehow associated with the larger business operation. I'm thinking franchise the corporate behemoth down to the mom and pop level. The American landscape needs to be re-thought and replaced. It really really sucks right now and is very de-humanizing. On every level. Thank you for your time.

The Gnostic Society

Photobucket
There will be some very interesting lectures to attend Friday evenings this summer given by Dr. Stephan Hoeller. I'm glad I stumbled across this little salon. You should come with...

The Gnostic Society

"I think we could describe it as a very early form of Christianity, very different in many respects from what Christianity became later on. It is much more individualistic. It is much more orientated toward the personal, spiritual advancement and transformation of the individual, regarding figures such as Jesus as being helpers rather than sacrificial saviors. It is a form of religion that has a much more ecumenical and universal scope in terms of its relationship to spiritual, religious traditions other than the Christian.
I would say that this appears to be, as far as Gnosticism is concerned, the time that the Greeks called the kairos, the time when the Gods are reborn. We live in an age, I think, when certain timeless ideas, which have been submerged and subdued for a long time, are making their appearance once again. In that respect we're living in very interesting times as the Chinese would say. Interesting times, spiritually powerful times, always cast a great shadow. There will also be great difficulties, but I think that Gnostic traditions, along with a number of kindred ideas, are being reborn at this time, and will have a significant influence in the future. Those of us who find ourselves working within that field are singularly blessed that we can do this work at this particular time. So I feel I'm at the right place and at the right time and I am profoundly grateful for all of that."

one of my artist friends says that painters should make at least 35 paintings a year-which is also about the amount that Vermeer made in his entire life

it's important to make art for the right reasons
otherwise it's a drag
