Traditionalism usually becomes more appealing to societies when populations are destabilized or demographics have shifted in favor of a small minority. The broad middle class is the bedrock of our democratic system. If it dissolves or disappears, it will logically follow that elites will shore up their power with increasingly fascistic measures. Large disillusioned masses are easily propagandized and highly prone to manipulation. Take a look at Weimar Germany...
